What to see:

Art collection

"That house of art" is how the painter John Constable described Petworth House in 1834. In the state rooms, you can see thousands of paintings, sculptures, including works by JMW Turner, Anthony van Dyck, John Flaxman and William Blake.

The house has also been described as a world-class museum in a countryside setting. It is home to many world-class objects, including the Molyneux Globe, the oldest surviving globe in England, and the illuminated manuscript of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales dating back to the 1420s, the most important book in the care of the National Trust.
