At least two people were killed and another is missing since the 16th typhoon to hit the Chinese mainland this year slammed into the western coast of South China's Guangdong province over the weekend, accompanied by raging storms and heavy rainfall.

More than 136,100 people living in low-lying areas were evacuated to safety in the five cities of Maoming, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Yangjiang and Yunfu by noon on Monday, according to a statement from Guangdong's Flood Control, Drought Relief and anti-Typhoon Headquarters.

"A total of 44 houses collapsed, while another 27 were damaged by the storms and heavy floods caused by the typhoon," the statement said.
