Typhoon set to hit Shanghai again

The municipal government of Shanghai issued an emergency notice on Thursday to warn against Typhoon Jongdari, which is likely to land on the city's coastal areas on Friday morning.

By 10 am, Jongdari, now a tropical storm, was moving on East China Sea, about 440 kilometers to the southeast of Zhoushan city, Zhejiang province. It's moving toward China's east coast at a speed of 18 km/h, with its intensity expected to remain same or even accelerate.

Shanghai's meteorological department at 12 pm on Thursday raised the alert level of typhoon from blue to yellow, the third most severe condition on China's four-tier warning system, following orange and red.

Jongdari is forecast to make landfall with winds of up to 83 km/h, the strength similar to Typhoon Ampil that lashed Shanghai's Chongming Island on July 22. It's expected to bring tremendous wind and rain to China's financial hub Shanghai.

In the notice released by the general office of the municipal government, all government agencies were urged to pay high attention to the storm.

They were asked to relocate and resettle residents from seaside areas, temporary residence on building sites and shanties, as well as scrutinize offshore facilities including Yangshan Deep-Water Port, and eliminate safety risks in all public facilities.

Officials should also stay on duty to make sure the emergency response system works well, said the notice.
