Storm causes floods in northern Athens
ATHENS - While Greece mourns and still seeks missing persons after Monday's deadly wildfire in Mati, eastern Attica, which resulted in over 80 casualties, a violent storm in the northern suburbs of Athens on Thursday turned the streets into rivers.
At least 200 calls were made to the Fire Brigade to help trapped drivers and pump water from flooded houses and shops, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.
At the same time, the image of dozens of overturned cars in an open parking lot in Maroussi made the rounds on local television channels and the internet.
In northern suburbs of Athens as Nea Erythraia, Kifissia, Penteli, Vrilissia and Melissia, roads were closed due to the heavy rain, while the Fire Brigade was required to save trapped drivers in at least eight cases.
The weather forecast states that in the coming days the weather will be shaky in Greece, but rains will be less intense.
