2 Polish fatalities among victims of wildfires in Greece
WARSAW - Two Poles, a mother and a son, are among victims of deadly fires in Greece, Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.
During the briefing in Warsaw, Artur Lompart, spokesman of the Ministry, confirmed that a woman and her son, were among around ten other people who drowned while trying to evacuate from the hotel on a boat, which later sank.
Janusz Smigielski, spokesman of the Grecos travel agency, the victims were travelling with, informed that the agency was in constant contact with the embassy and insurance company. It has also provided a psychologist care for the victims' family members.
According to the travel agency, 435 of their clients were currently in the area of Attiki, around 30 of whom will return to Poland on Wednesday, while the remaining 400 people were staying out of the danger zone.
According to official Greek statistics published on Tuesday, at least 50 people lost their lives during the raging wildfires which broke out on Monday near Athens. Greece has requested European support to extinguish the fires, as around 47 of them broke out across the country on Monday and Tuesday.
Greece is one of the top holiday destinations among the Polish tourists.
