From forests to fortune

The people of the Loess Plateau in Shanxi province, North China, used to work the dry land scarred with cracked mud. However, their lives have changed dramatically since the 1990s as a result of an ecological protection program that has seen the infertile area transformed into an oasis of greenery and raised living standards.
