SYDNEY -- A 21-year-old man from the Kuraby suburb of Australia's Queensland state capital Brisbane has been charged with terrorism-related offenses as part of a multiforce crackdown, authorities said on Saturday.

Between late 2016 and early last year, the suspect "made preparations to travel to Syria to engage in hostile activities," the Australian Federal Police said in a statement.

"It will also be alleged he encouraged and recruited other people to join him in traveling to Syria; so they could also join organizations engaged in hostile activities against foreign governments," it added.

The man was arrested at his home on Saturday morning by a counter-terrorism team made up of the national security intelligence organization, federal and state police.

The latest case is a reminder that the threat posed by terrorism is ongoing, said the federal police's Acting Assistant Commissioner Matthew Rippon.
