China seizes 955,800 tonnes of foreign garbage in Jan-May

BEIJING -- China has handled 248 cases of illegal trash imports in the first five months of the year, seizing 955,800 tonnes of foreign garbage, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said Tuesday.
The GAC began its largest campaign against illegal trash imports in May, seizing 137,000 tonnes of foreign garbage.
This year, the customs authority launched a crackdown targeting the smuggling of foreign garbage, agricultural products, drugs, guns, and other products.
A total of 1,613 smuggling cases have been handled in the Jan-May period, according to the GAC.
The GAC has seized 282 kg of smuggled ivory products and 1,779 kg of drugs during this period.
