Prefab proving fabulous in challenging environment
"There is an urgent need to promote the modernization of the construction industry on the plateau for a more prosperous Tibet," Li said.
To achieve this, the university team began launching pilot projects using prefab buildings and structural systems last year in seven cities or counties in Tibet - including Shigatse, Dromo and Damshung.
The system has been introduced to enterprises as well, such as Tibetan Construction Technology and Lhasa City Investment Energy-Saving Building Materials Co.
In Shigatse, the research team proposed several new high-altitude prefab building systems adapted to local geological and climatological conditions.
Residents can choose from nine types of model apartments - from 80 to 300 sq m - all designed in harmony with traditional Tibetan architectural elements.
In May, seven experts from scientific research institutions, societies and enterprises in the sector conducted field inspections of buildings in trial-run projects in Tibet.
Experts concluded that prefab construction in the region met leading levels in the industry, and could work as a valuable reference for future architectural options on the plateau.
To accelerate development, the team offers training to local architects and researchers who may be unfamiliar with the methods, and has set up a department in Shigatse where faculty and graduates from Shanghai Jiao Tong University can do scientific research. The department also implemented a development plan for prefab buildings in Shigatse up to 2025.
