At least nine people were killed and 16 others injured after a van plowed into pedestrians in Toronto's northern suburbs on Monday, police said.
A man drove a white van onto the sidewalk along Toronto's main thoroughfare on Monday, striking several people before police stopped the vehicle and took its driver into custody, authorities said.
Eight to 10 people were hit by the van, the police said.
A law enforcement official briefed on the situation in Toronto told CNN the incident is believed to be deliberate.
In a video of the man's arrest posted on social media, he could be heard saying, "Kill me."
Toronto police said the incident happened around 1 p.m. on Monday in the area of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue.
