Chinese woman awarded fellowship for 5G research

A Chinese woman became one of 12 recipients of a 2018 graduate fellowship from a transnational society that promotes the advancement of microwave theory and its applications.

Qian Huizhen, now studying for a doctorate in electronic science and engineering at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, was awarded the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society Graduate Fellowship for her research into data rate, power efficiency and beam-steering resolution in microwave and millimeter-wave applications, according to the IEEE MTT-S website.

IEEE MTT-S is a transnational society with more than 10,500 members and 190 chapters worldwide.

It promotes the advancement of microwave theory and its applications, including radio frequency, microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies.

Up to 12 fellowships in the amount of $6,000 are granted each year to assist students pursuing a graduate degree in microwave engineering, said the website of IEEE MTT-S.

Eight of the other 11 recipients, not including Qian, are from the US and three are from European countries.

Qian is the only recipient from Asia, and her inclusion marks the first time that a Chinese individual was awarded the graduate fellowship, according to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

The university said the fellowship was founded in 2006 and is awarded to those who have key research projects with industrial application value.

Qian is from Shexian county in Handan, North China’s Hebei province.

She attended high school at Shexian No 1 Middle School from 2001 to 2004, Shijiazhuang Daily reported.
