China is willing to further align the Belt and Road Initiative with Tonga's development strategy and further enhance pragmatic cooperation with Tonga in various areas, Premier Li Keqiang said.

Li made the remarks Thursday when meeting with Tonga's King Tupou VI in Beijing. The king is on a nine-day state visit to China starting from Thursday at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

Noting that this year marks the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Tonga, Li said that China is willing to further deepen people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and lift bilateral relations to new heights, adding that China supports Tonga's major construction programs in infrastructure and improving people's livelihood.

China is willing to carry out communication with Tonga in the area of agricultural technology, and welcomes Tonga's agricultural and fishery products to China, Li said.

During the talks, Li also expressed his condolences to Tonga as the country has recently suffered from a severe hurricane. He said he hopes the people of Tonga can work to overcome difficulties and reconstruct their homes, reiterating that China is willing to provide help within its capacity.

King Tupou VI said that Tonga has been firmly supporting the One China policy, while the country's relations with China have shown healthy and stable development in the past 20 years. He said Tonga is willing to further deepen political trust with China. He also said Tonga is ready to expand economic and trade cooperation with China and enhance bilateral cooperation in areas of education, infrastructure, agriculture and food.
