Man arrested after security incident at US airbase in Britain's Suffolk

LONDON - Police in Suffolk, southeastern Britain, have taken a man into custody with cuts and bruises after a "significant incident" at RAF Mildenhall, a US airforce base in Britain, the police tweeted Monday.

"Shots were fired by American service personnel and a man has been detained with cuts and bruises and taken into custody," the Suffolk Police said in a brief statement.

No other people have been injured as the result of the incident, the statement added.

According to local media reports, a man was arrested after allegedly attempting to drive through an entry point at the airforce base and shots were fired by US service personnel.

RAF Mildenhall was put into lockdown after police was contacted at about 1340 GMT following the "security incident" and members of the public are asked to avoid the RAF Mildenhall area for the time being.

RAF Mildenhall has previously been a potential target for a terrorist attack.

Junead Khan, a delivery driver, was convicted last year for plotting to behead a US serviceman outside RAF Mildenhall In 2016.
