And the three-character Chinese name for the Forbidden City, Zi Jin Cheng, contains the character zi (purple).

There is also a Chinese idiom “purple air coming from the east”, which means auspicious things are coming. The phrase comes from the Records of the Grand Historian, or Shi Ji, a monumental history of ancient China finished during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24).

When paired with pink, violet makes women look soft and feminine. In the classic TV adaptation The Legend of White Snake, Lady White Snake often wears two layers of robes in pink and violet.

The color can also go with black, white, blue, yellow and different shades of green. Be careful if you want to wear it with red — often, this match can not give people a best look.

If you want to buy some new clothes for the coming year, violet might be a great choice.
