In the report he delivered at the opening session of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Oct 18, General Secretary Xi Jinping said that the development of a crime prevention and control system will be accelerated to combat and punish, in accordance with law, all illegal and criminal activities, such as pornography, gambling, drug abuse, gang violence, kidnapping and fraud, and to protect people's personal rights, property rights and right to dignity.

The right to dignity is a fundamental human right. Stepping into a new era, China's principal social contradiction has changed, and now people's material demands have been basically satisfied, people's demand for dignity is stronger than before.

Writing the right to dignity into this report is of great significance, therefore, not only to people as individuals but also to social development, which shows that the Party pays great attention to people's changing expectations.

In the next stage, relevant measures and policies in the field of legislation, law enforcement and jurisdiction are likely to be introduced to fully implement the requirement of the report, which will promote the protection of the right to dignity in China.
