Disney bows with a merchandising blitz
The Walt Disney Co opened its biggest ever store by size in Shanghai on May 20, predominantly to market the Shanghai Disney Resort, which is scheduled to open next spring.
Located in the landmark financial area lujiazui in Pudong, the store is the company's first in the mainland and will spearhead what is expected to be a huge merchandising operation, offering more than 2,000 products, 90 percent of which will be exclusive to the site.
Paul Candland, the president of The Walt Disney Co Asia, said: "The shopping experience is designed to be entertaining and to be complementary to what we do in our parks."
Walt Disney has 300 stores worldwide. The Shanghai outlet is fully owned, but the soon-to-open resort is a joint venture with local company Shanghai Shendi Group.
Universities launch degree partnership
The University of Edinburgh announced on May 19 it was entering into a biomedical science degree partnership with China's Zhejiang University.
According to a media release from the University of Edinburgh, the collaborative degree will be taught entirely in English by Edinburgh and Zhejiang academics at Zhejiang's new international campus in Hangzhou.
The four-year undergraduate course in integrative biomedical sciences is expected to attract 600 students from China and the rest of the world. The course curriculum will be co-devised by academics from Edinburgh and Zhejiang.
The degree program will offer a curriculum including infectious diseases, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and reproductive biology.
Transport deals get green light
The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, approved a series of subway and rail projects on May 18 worth a total investment of more than 240 billion yuan (34.78 billion euros).
