WANG XIUJUN, deputy director of the State Internet Information Office, quoted in the Sunday edition of People's Daily as saying that the office has noted increased "foreign ideological penetration" of cyberspace and that countering this will be a key issue concerning the country's future. Wang said these forces are trying to make trouble with China through the Internet in the name of "Internet freedom." People were conducting illegal and criminal activities or spreading harmful information via the Internet for political or commercial purposes, Wang added.
