Engaging content, superb layout come in for special mention
China Daily European Weekly has been named International Newspaper of the Year in this year's Newspaper Awards in London.
It is the first time that a Chinese publication has won the award.
The awards recognize the best in print and digital news media production and innovation.
Announcing China Daily European Weekly's award, the judges praised its "superb design, attractive layout and exceptional print". The newspaper's engaging content and superb layouts made it a standout title, they said.
The five other nominees in the category were the German newspapers Abendzeitung, Donaukurier, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Heilbronner Stimme and the British The Telegraph Weekly.
The winners were announced at a ceremony in London.
In other categories, The Daily Telegraph was named National Newspaper of the Year, the Irish News was named regional Newspaper of the Year and Financial Times Web App was named Newspaper App of the Year.
Gary Cullum, director of the Newspaper Awards, said: "The 2014 panel of judges really had their work cut out this year. Not only were they presented with around 1,000 newspapers, both print and digital, the quality of entry was tremendous."
"The shortlist once again provides a showcase for all that is excellent in the newspaper industry both from this country and around the world."
China Daily, China's leading English-language newspaper, launched its European Weekly in December 2010, aspiring to better serve its goal of being a newspaper that provides a window for China to be understood by and to understand the world.
China Daily European Weekly, which now covers nearly 30 countries in Europe, is Europe's first English-language Chinese paper.
In 2011 it won the Launch Paper of the Year award presented by the Association of Circulation Executives in Britain, and in the same year it won the International Media Award presented by the Plain English Campaign.
