On Feb 18, 1991, Deng Xiaoping visited the construction site of Nanpu Bridge in Shanghai and then listened to the planning report for the economic development of Pudong.
During the investigation in Shanghai, Deng Xiaoping put forward requirements: "Tightening up and sticking to Pudong development till success", "hoping the people of Shanghai will further emancipate their minds, be more daring and move ahead faster."
He said Shanghai would attract investments if the city paid attention to international practices, and that finance would be the core of a modern economy in Shanghai. Shanghai used to be and will be the financial center of China, and China's international status in finance will rely on Shanghai, he said.
