Diplomatic Pouch >> With Mike Peters
The German Ambassador to China Michael Schaefer celebrated his country's national day, the Day of German Unity, on Oct 3 in a big way in Beijing.
October also marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, and the embassy sponsored a series of music and design events at the just-ended Beijing Design Week.
Schaefer will host a reception at the embassy on Oct 10 for hundreds of invited guests, and the following night will escort German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and several Chinese dignitaries to a German concert at the National Center for the Performing Arts.
The Swedish embassy announced that the author Sven Lindquist will speak in Shanghai on Oct 6. Since 1955, Sven has published more than 30 books of essays, aphorisms, autobiographies, documentary prose, travel and reportage, including The Myth of Wu Tao-Tzu, which he wrote in Beijing during his time as a cultural attache to China starting in 1962.
The book is being published in English for the first time this year by Granta.
One year ago Innovation Center Denmark launched the website www.sinodanishnetwork.com to promote Danish education and career opportunities for Chinese students and professionals. The Danish embassy says the center marked the anniversary by launching a Chinese version of the webpage, and promises that the network's biggest events to date are coming up this month.
More than 12 university events have been hosted with representatives from Danish universities and a current total of 15 partner companies.
Almost 1,000 Chinese people have registered their profiles in the network, and more than 2,500 are following the Sina Weibo profile.
The Delegation of the European Union and EU member-state embassies, in cooperation with Chinese science and technology organizations, will hold a series of information seminars across China through Nov 9.
The events aim to raise awareness among innovation stakeholders in China about the research-and-development collaboration opportunities Europe offers, including mobility schemes.
European science and technology embassy counselors and representatives of research organizations from several EU countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Britain, will present and discuss European programs in eight cities in China.
The campaign began last month and will last until November. The first cluster of seminars was held in Kunming and Chongqing Sept 24-25.
Finnish Ambassador to China Lars Backstrom will open an exhibition next week titled "The Spirit of the Material", which will display Finnish and Chinese art glass side by side.
The show, at the White Box Museum of Art in Beijing's trendy 798 Art Zone, runs from Oct 12-24.
It is a satellite event of Radical Design Week, being held in Shanghai in conjunction with World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.
