The US embassy website this week features the US Olympic table tennis team - all Chinese-Americans.

Lily Zhang, 15, has dreamed of playing table tennis at the Olympics since she was a child. She earned her chance by winning a women's singles qualifying match in North Carolina in April, the embassy says, and now she is going to the 2012 London Olympics.

Zhang is the youngest on the US team, which includes three other Olympics first-timers: Ariel Hsing, 16; Erica Wu, 16; and Timothy Wang, 20.

The US embassy in China is currently seeking candidates for the 2013-14 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, which brings accomplished mid-career professionals from eligible countries to the US for a year of study and related practical experience.

Fellowships are granted competitively to candidates who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to public service. The fellowship was initiated in 1978 to honor the late US senator and vice-president Hubert H. Humphrey. Since 1978, more than 4,700 fellows from more than 160 countries have participated in the program, including about 130 from China. Each year, about 180 fellowships are awarded to scholars from about 90 countries around the world.

Us Consul General in Guangzhou Brian L. Goldbeck welcomed participants to the 2012 English Language Teaching Conference last week, noting that "as a former teacher of high school and junior high school students and a life-long student myself, I understand the vital role that educators play in their students' lives and the powerful influence we can have on their future".

Goldbeck said his small university of 12,000 students in northern Wisconsin now offers Mandarin language training, and it hosts nearly 100 Chinese students and several professors.

Houston's Chinese Consul General Xu Erwen met Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans last week during her visit to Louisiana. He also thanked Xu for coming to the World Cultural Economic Forum held in New Orleans.
