Love reading history books when a teenager. Took a job at an electronic factory in Beijing after graduation from senior middle school in 1976.
Took the first national college entrance examination in December 1977 after its 10 years' suspension during the "cultural revolution" (1966-1976) and got enrolled in the then Beijing Foreign Languages Institute, which is now Beijing Foreign Studies University, majoring in English.
Joined China Daily in July 1981 and went to study journalism at the University of Hawaii as a young Chinese journalist from China Daily.
Obtained Master's of Arts degree in journalism from Stanford University in June 1986.

从小喜欢读历史书籍。高中毕业后曾在北京一家集体所有制工厂当工人。1977年，文革结束后第一次高考时，考入北京外国语学院，主修英国语言与文学专业，获得学士学位。毕业后考入中国日报，做记者、编辑工作，用英文撰写新闻、通讯、特写、专访和消息。受中国日报委派，于1981年在美国夏威夷大学新闻系进修一年；于1985年至1986年在美国斯坦福大学传播系学习，获得新闻硕士学位。1996年获第二届全国百佳新闻工作者称号；1998年获国务院政府特殊津贴。
