NANNING - A couple in southwest China attacked six court officials and police with sulfuric acid on Tuesday, severely injuring two of the victims, local authorities in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region said.

Liao Kedong, president of Changzhou district court in Wuzhou city, and his subordinates were burned by acid poured on them from above when they were entering a building to enforce a court decision in a case involving a financial dispute. Half of Liao' s face was reportedly burned.

Chen Hongsheng and Liao Fengjuan, the couple who court officials tried to approach, were arrested following a two-hour siege launched by armed police and firefighters who rushed to the scene.

The injured were immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment and are no longer facing life-threatening injuries, according to Liu Youming, a senior Wuzhou official.

Liu said police are investigating the case.

Personal grudges, a mental breakdown and dissatisfaction over the justice system led to a spate of violent attacks in China in recent weeks. In addition to half a dozen school knife attacks, a man barged into a court office and shot dead three judges before killing himself in central Hunan province earlier this month.
