HK cycling star Wong Kam-Po crowned in National Championship(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-07-25 08:05 Asian cycling star Wong Kam-po from Hong Kong demonstrated his speed and endurance in the track cycling after taking gold in men's individual point race at the 2007 Chinese national track cycling championship here on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Wong got 36 points in the final to make himself crowned, while silver went to Wen Hairui from Hebei with 29 points. Showing his strong form in the final, Wong firmed his position in the point race. "It was quite normal for Wong to lift the title. He came from road cycling and was good at long-distance race," said Wong's coach Shen Jinkang. "We local cyclists are lacking experiences. I'm aiming to strengthen my speeding-up in the coming period," said the silver medalist Wen Hairui. Wong won the men's 15km scratch race at the world track cycling championships in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in May, which gave him some confidence of taking a medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "Obviously, winning the world championship has proved his ability in the track cycling. And, of course, I have confidence that he could win a medal in Beijing," added Shen. Eaily on, Beijing cyclist Tian Fang pocketed up a silver in women's individual 500m time-trial final while the gold went to Asian Games' silver medalist Gong Jinjie from Jilin. Eighteen cyclists came into the final and Gong Jinjie defeated all competitors to win Jilin gold with a result of 35.153 seconds. Beijing veteran Tian Fang clocked 35.608 to take the second place.Bronze went to Wang Anyu from Sichuan with 35.786. "I started a little bit faster than I used to be. I thought it was the key for me to take silver, " said Tian Fang. Zheng Lulu from the national team only finished in 36.970 and failed to take the podium. "Zheng Lulu and Gong Jinjie were quite different cyclists. Zheng starts fast and has a strong stamina, while Gong was good at speed-up," commented Tian.
