Thirty-four post-graduate students from the Literature and Media Schools of Chongqing University have recently applied for Olympic volunteer positions, Chongqing Times reported.

The group of hardworking and dedicated students from China's southwest are conducting research on Olympic Marketing and plan to submit a joint thesis paper to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

CCY publishes Olympic volunteer proposal

Mr. Li Haoran, director of the literature school said that the school will publish a proposal to call for wide involvement in the Olympic Volunteer activities on its campus. "We have already seen the initial 34 first-year graduates come to register."

He added, "as the students are majoring in news and communications, they are interested in events like the Olympics".

Volunteer Service

Ms. Wei Shiping, Vice-Secretary of the literature school said, they are carrying on a "Second Class" plan, accounting for six credits. "The volunteer service is important to evaluate the students and the school will go on to formulate an incitement program as part of their joint thesis work.

She added that volunteer activities will acquaint the students with the real world and facilitate their future job-search.

Ms. Wei explained that the school will take good note of the volunteer activities each student engages in. The students will get their graduation certificate and academic certificate, as well as a "Second Class" practicing certificate when they graduate.

Research on "Olympic Popularization"

Bidding to become an Olympic Volunteer is just a beginning. The graduates will conduct extensive academic research on the Olympic Games. Mr. Li added that they are preparing a special research paper on Olympic popularization based on news and media reports.

"The Olympics is the focus of the news media worldwideĦ The graduates are reviewing the news and media materials of past Olympics and a joint thesis paper will be finished next month," added Mr. Li.

The joint thesis collection will be later presented to BOCOG. "We hope the Olympics will benefit from the work," added Mr. Li.

Speaking contest winners

A majority of Olympic volunteer candidates have mastered at least a high level of English competency. Among them, a young girl named He Bo was one of the top three contestants in a recent nationwide TV English speaking contest.

Ms. He said, "I would like to be an interpreter for the Olympics".

She added that her desire to speak fluent English will enable her to serve the Olympics better. As few graduates are enrolling to become Olympic volunteers, the graduates from faraway Chongqing hope to encourage one another and show their passion for the Olympic Games.
