Ten Beijing volunteers who made remarkable contributions to the general
welfare in 2006 were awarded on Wednesday at a ceremony held by the Beijing
youth league organization, the Beijing Volunteer Association and the Beijing
Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

The awardees included oculist Han Song,
who has worked for years in poor areas of the country; Tsinghua University
student Liang Suhui, who offers free lessons to migrant workersĄŻ children and
has a volunteer experience at the Doha Asian Games; and Wang Lili, student of
Capital University of Economics and Business, who has been a bedside companion
for many disconsolate AIDS patients.
Beijing has since 2004 held the annual selection of top ten volunteers with
an aim to spread volunteerism, improve citizensĄŻ manners and create a harmonious
society in the lead-up to the 2008 Olympic Games. Over 330,000 people voted
online for the 2006 top volunteers.
The organizers said people are eager to take part in voluntary services. A
total of 418,723 applicants have been registered for the Beijing 2008 Olympic
Games and Paralympic Games as of March 27, which marked the 500-day countdown to
the Games.
As the Olympics and Paralympcs need only about 100,000 Games-time volunteers,
the organizers called on the applicants to be prepared to participate in other
forms of volunteerism, which will involve many more citizens.
