International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge is to visit Uganda in January.

Rogge will be the second Olympic head to visit the country since Juan Antonio Samaranch's historic visit in 1985.

"He will be coming from Congo Brazzaville where he is expected to officiate at an international youth seminar. He is only visiting Uganda," revealed Francis Nyangweso, president of Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC).

Rogge is visiting Uganda as part of his election pledge on July 16 2001 in Moscow.

"He will get first hand information of what is going on. He will also see what we are trying to do and how IOC can help us to achieve better results. He will also see how best the Olympic Movement can assist in promoting the country socially," said Nyangweso.

The 64-year-old Belgian will meet Ugandan sports stakeholders to get a picture of how sports are developing in the country. He is also expected to meet the country's political leaders and sports promoters.

Uganda has had a credible run in the Olympic Games since 1956, only missing out on the 1976 edition that they boycotted. John Akii Bua won Uganda's only gold medal in Munich in 1972.

Uganda has 16 UOC registered associations including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, swimming, cycling, football, handball, hockey, shooting, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
