RIO DE JANEIRO - Rio de Janeiro's City Council approved on Tuesday of a bill authorizing Rios application to host the Olympic Games in 2016.

According to the bill, the city mayor Cesar Maia and the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) will be in charge of launching the campaign. A group of 13 counselors were the authors to the bill.

Rio was chosen in September to be Brazil's representative in the race to become the venue of the Olympics in 2016. It is the third time that the city has launched its application to host the Olympics. In 1996, COB announced Rio was running for venue of the 2004 Games, which ended up being held in Athens, Greece.

In 2003, the so-called marvelous city also applied for the event in 2012, but London won the dispute. At the time, it was believed that the approval of Rio to host the Pan American Games 2007 would help the candidacy to the Olympics, but enthusiasts soon realized that a satisfactory performance at the organization of the competition next year would serve as a better proof of the city's capacity to hold an international sports event.

The venue of the Olympic Games 2016 will only be chosen in 2009. Madrid (Spain), Tokyo (Japan), Rome (Italy) and a city in the United States, as well as the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, announced on Tuesday, are also confirmed in the race.
