The second workshop on
weather forecast and research for the 2008 Olympic Games was opened in Beijing
on Wednesday.
The meeting deals with the scientific and technological problems in the
weather prediction system of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Forecast Demonstration
Project (B08FDP) and Research Demonstration Project (B08RDP), verification of
prediction technologies and appraisal of the system's social-economic impact.
The participants will offer comments and proposals for the system's test
operation in 2007.
Co-organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and China
Meteorological Administration (CMA), the three-day workshop attracted more than
60 meteorological scientists and officials from WMO, China, Australia, USA,
Canada, Japan, Austria and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The B08FDP/RDP project includes the short-range and meso-scale prediction
system. In October 2004, the 7th Science Steering Committee meeting of the WMO
World Weather Research Program (WWRP) endorsed the inclusion of the B08 project
in the WWRP international weather forecast demonstration project to be
co-organized by WWRP and CMA with the participation of meteorologists from
countries and regions concerned.
The first WMO workshop on the B08 project was held in Beijing from 29 to 31
March 2005.
